I am sure I was dreaming over the weekend. I have a memory of such a fantastic meal that I am not really sure if it actually happened. It was a perfect synergy of food and champagne.
There was a glow in the dark label from Dom Perignon, a magnum of Laurent Perrier with a matching candle, caviar and white truffles, all coming together for one perfect, unforgettable instance in time.
The meal, involving several couples, was not meticulously planned. That the star ingredient was white truffle and the star beverage was champagne was all that was really talked about, and yet, everyone contributed and every champagne matched every course perfectly.
Of course I was wearing my ‘Sounds of Happiness’ ring, but had mentioned that I was yet to find a cap that matched my turquoise dress. As even more proof that I was possibly dreaming, when we opened a beautiful 1990 Laurent Perrier Grand Siècle Magnum, the cap was turquoise, with a sun emblem in the middle! How could the night get any better?
Another highlight of the night was a bottle of 2004 Louis Roederer Cristal, paired with white truffle tagliatelle, and Carpaccio of eye fillet with fennel salad and white truffle. We were worried that we were drinking it a bit young, but it seemed to work. While savouring our truffles, the dinner party conversation turned to CzarAlexander 1 of Russia, who specially commissioned Cristal. He was afraid of being poisoned, so commissioned the bottles to not only be clear (made from crystal) to see what was inside, but also without a punt, so that no bombs could secretly be hidden in the recess! It must have been difficult being a Czar and having to worry about things like that, but at least we have Cristal to thank him for!
Perhaps I was dreaming. But it was lovely while it lasted.
May all your dreams come true
What a fantastic post – and dinner!
That Marc Hebrart Rose is fantastic, the 04 Cristal is drinking extremely well, and Grand Siecle – well, one of my favorites! Sounds like a phenomenal meal!
